You need about 10 Mbps for HD, 25 Mbps for 4K and 50 Mbps for 8K. But the number that actually matters is not the one on your speed test — it is the speed your line holds at nine o’clock on a Sunday evening, which is usually a great deal lower.

Those are working minimums with a little headroom, not absolute floors. A 4K stream will technically start on 20 Mbps; it will not survive a dip.
Why sustained speed is the only figure that matters
A speed test measures a few seconds at whatever moment you run it, usually during the day. What a stream needs is that speed continuously, for ninety minutes, at the busiest time of the evening.
A line that reports 300 Mbps at midday and sags to 15 Mbps at nine on a Sunday will stutter through exactly the match you subscribed to watch. A steady 30 Mbps connection will not. Consistency beats headline speed every time, and it is the single most misunderstood thing about IPTV performance.
Test at the right time
Run a speed test at 9pm on a weekday and again at 9pm on a Sunday, not at 11am on a Tuesday. If the evening figure is less than half the daytime one, your problem is congestion rather than capacity, and no amount of extra bandwidth from your provider will fix it.
Wi-Fi is usually the bottleneck, not the broadband
People assume a slow stream means slow internet. More often the broadband is fine and the last ten metres are the problem.
Wi-Fi throughput is not a fixed number. It falls with distance from the router, drops through walls and floors, and degrades when neighbouring networks compete for the same channel — which in a flat or a terrace is constant. A 4K stream needing 25 Mbps sustained can fail on a connection that tests at 200 Mbps if the device is two rooms from the router.
What to do about it
- Run a cable. About $10, and it removes the variable entirely. An official Fire TV Ethernet adapter is around $15. This is the highest-value fix available.
- Use 5 GHz, not 2.4 GHz. Shorter range, far less congested, much higher throughput.
- Move the device or the router so they are within line of sight.
- Try a powerline adapter if cabling is impossible. Usually more stable than Wi-Fi over the same distance.
Upload speed does not matter
A common worry, and it is misplaced. IPTV is almost entirely download. Your upload figure is irrelevant to streaming quality — a 100/10 connection streams identically to a 100/100 one. Ignore it.
Latency and packet loss matter more than people think
Two figures your speed test may not show clearly.
Latency affects how quickly channels change, not picture quality. High ping makes zapping feel sluggish while the stream itself plays fine.
Packet loss is the real culprit behind stuttering on a line that appears fast enough. Even 1 to 2% loss causes visible interruptions, because the player is waiting for data that never arrives. If your speed is comfortably above requirement and it still stutters, packet loss is the likely cause — and it is usually a Wi-Fi problem or a fault on your line rather than anything the provider controls.
How many streams your connection supports
Add the requirements together, and leave room for everything else the house is doing.
- 25 Mbps line: one 4K stream, or two HD. Nothing else running.
- 50 Mbps line: two 4K streams comfortably.
- 100 Mbps line: three or four 4K streams plus normal household use.
- Under 10 Mbps: HD only, and expect trouble in the evening.
Remember what else competes: a video call, a console downloading in the background, a cloud backup. Any of those can consume a 4K stream entire budget. Check before blaming the stream.
What to do if your connection is not enough
- Cable the device. Before anything else, and before spending money on a faster package.
- Drop a quality level. A clean 1080p stream looks better than a stuttering 4K one. This is not a compromise, it is the correct choice.
- Test at peak time to establish whether it is capacity or congestion. They need different fixes.
- Then consider upgrading — but only if the evening figure genuinely falls short, not because the daytime figure looks low.
The honest summary
IPTV cannot be better than the line it arrives on. That is the one genuine disadvantage against satellite and aerial, which deliver an identical signal to everyone in the footprint regardless of the evening.
